Fargesia Black Dragon

Fargesia Black Dragon

Fargesia 'Black Dragon' is a clump-forming, non-invasive evergreen bamboo prized for dense, graceful screening and hedging. It produces slender, arching canes with fine green foliage, forming a tight clump that is ideal for narrow boundaries and privacy planting. Best grown in moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil, it does well in sun or light shade and benefits from a position out of drying winds. Expect an eventual height of about 3–4m with a natural clump spread of roughly 1.5–2m if untrimmed, making it a versatile choice for medium to tall hedges and living screens.

Feeding time: Spring — apply a light dressing of a general-purpose fertiliser and mulch the root area.
Trimming time: Spring — remove any dead, weak or damaged canes at the base to thin the clump; Summer — carry out a light trim to tidy and shape hedge faces if required.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
