Chaenomeles spec. Rubra
Chaenomeles spec. Rubra
Chaenomeles speciosa 'Rubra' is a deciduous flowering quince that can be trained as a wall shrub, forming a dense, spreading framework ideal for covering wires or trellis. In early spring (March to April) it bears vivid red, single flowers on bare or just-emerging wood, followed by green foliage. This climber requires a suitable support to establish and grow. Thriving in full sun to light shade and in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, it is well suited to wall-side borders and cottage-style planting. When trained on a support, it typically reaches about 2m in height and 2m in spread.
This climbing plant has been trained onto a supporting frame to create a neat, well-shaped specimen that is ready for planting. As it grows, new shoots can be guided and secured to continue developing its natural shape.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
